17.02.10 - Legal Weapon returns to Lancashire colleges

Legal Weapon returns to Lancashire colleges

AN innovative theatre production returns to Lancashire this February, in a bid to reduce road casualties amongst young drivers.

Legal Weapon, a drama performed by members of APE Theatre Group, tells the tale of a sixth form couple who are torn apart by the consequences of speeding and highlights the effects of peer pressure on young people.

Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group has commissioned performances of Legal Weapon in 10 schools and colleges during February.

Clare Farrer, Deputy Road Safety Group Manager, explained:

"Drama is a powerful tool in encouraging young people to think about their driving abilities and the consequences of dangerous driving. We hope Legal Weapon helps young people think about the importance of being a sensible passenger as well as a good driver. It only takes a small distraction to cause a big incident.

"Statistics show that this age group is the most likely to be involved in a road crash - 115 teenagers in Lancashire aged 16 to 19 were killed or seriously injured in 2008. Legal Weapon encourages young people to think that being a skilled driver is not enough to keep you out of danger on the roads - you also need a responsible attitude."

Legal Weapon will run in Lancashire from 22 - 26 February.
