Drivers asked to reduce CO2 for Environment Day

DRIVERS are being encouraged to think about lowering their CO2 emissions to mark World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June. A decision that could also help them save money and be safer on the roads.

Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group is asking people to adapt their driving to reduce their carbon footprint.

Neil Cunliffe, Road Safety Group Manager, said:

"The easiest way to cut down on CO2 emissions is to use public transport or to walk or cycle on shorter journeys, but if this is not possible you can make small changes to the way you drive. Smarter driving can save you money, as you will spend less on fuel."

Follow the Road Safety Group's top tips to help you lower your CO2 emissions and fuel costs.

  •     Have your vehicle serviced as often as your owner's manual suggests, this will help keep the engine running smoothly and efficiently.
  •      Check your tyre pressures at least once a week. Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 per cent.
  •      Take anything out of your boot that you don't need, as carrying extra weight to carry uses more fuel.
  •      Remove roof racks, boxes and bike carriers when not being used as they create drag and wind resistance, reducing fuel efficiency.
  •      Plan your journey before you set off to avoid congestion, road works and getting lost.
  •      Adopt a lighter touch on your accelerator pedal, to help reduce your fuel consumption.
  •      Turn off your air conditioning and heated rear window when they are not needed to save up to 10 to15 per cent on fuel consumption.
  •      Don't speed. The AA reports that if you drive at 70mph it uses up to 9 per cent more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15 per cent more than at 50mph.
